Spellings

As vocabulary increases through exposure to high quality texts,  pupils begin to more fully understand the relationships between words, how to understand differences in meaning and how to develop their use of creative figurative language. Pupils are taught how to work out and clarify the meanings and spellings of familiar and unfamiliar words based on a growing set of strategies taught by the class teacher.

These lists are statutory in the National Curriculum and are a mixture of words pupils frequently use in their writing and those which they often misspell.

High frequency words are taught in lower year groups but are common words which are often misspelt.
