50 Reads

MDJS Reading Challenge

Each year group has a list of 50 books for you to try and read during your time in that year group. Below there are tick sheets for you to keep track of how many you have read. Tell your class teacher or teaching assistant when you have read a book from the Reading Challenge so they can keep track of how many you have read. Once you have read enough, you will earn a reward:

Number of books you read Reward
  2 A certificate
  5 A 'Reading Star' badge
20 A free book (up to the value of £5)
50 A £10 voucher to buy lots of new books!

How many have you read?

Once you have hit one of the above milestones, your name will be added to our Reading Challenge display wall:

Where can you get the reading challenge books from?

  • In Class: You may find some of the reading challenge books on your class bookshelf.

  • School Library: On your allocated library day, you can request a 50 Reads book from the library. When you log onto Junior Librarian, type '50 reads year 3' (change to your year group) and click classification on the drop down list, then search. This will show you all of the available reading challenge books for your year group.

  • Local Library: Check your local library - lots of these have online reservation services too.

  • Shops: You could buy the books from a shop. Check charity shops or second hand book shops first.

  • Online reading services: Maybe your family have a subscription to an online reading service such as Audible, Amazon Prime - Kindle Books, etc. You might find some of the challenge books there.

  • Friends and family: Ask around, maybe someone you know has that book and wouldn't mind letting you borrow it for a while. Check with the children in your class and see if you could do a swap (remember that the books will need to be left in school for 2 days/over a weekend for quarantine before you can take them home again).
