Do plants need light to grow?

In Science, 3SM have been investigating how sunlight affects plant growth. To explore this, we set up a simple experiment using two identical plants: one was placed in a sunny spot, and the other was kept in a dark cupboard. Both plants received the same amount of water so the children could observe the impact of light alone. Over 2 weeks, they noticed striking differences in colour, height and leaf strength, helping them understand that plants need light to grow healthily.

How water travels...

3SM have also looked ar how water is transported in a plant using a vibrant investigation with roses. The class set up three stems: one placed in blue food colouring, one in red food colouring, and one in plain water. The children made thoughtful predictions, suggesting the roses would change colour as the coloured water travelled up the stem. Over time, they observed the petals beginning to tint, helping them clearly see how water moves through a plant’s stem and reaches the leaves and flowers.
